Frequently Asked Questions

How can a School become more energy efficient?

Energy efficiency measures undertaken on schools are unique, primarily due to the occupancy hours and nature of use. Typically, 60-70% of energy consumption in a school is expended on heating demand, with 30-40% on electrical demand (lighting and services). SEAI  recommend the following energy efficiency measures below for schools.

  1. Insulate the building – including cavity wall insulation, dry lining, external insulation, attic insulation, roof insulation, and air-tightness
  2. Implement building fabric measures –  including doors and windows
  3. Upgrade mechanical systems –  including boiler replacement, zoning of heating systems, heating controls within each classroom, pipe insulation, boiler controls and water conservation
  4. Install a Building Management System (BMS)
  5. Upgrade your electrics – primarily lighting system upgrades (classrooms to T5 or LED, common areas to LED)

Schools and their designers and contractors should note that all works undertaken in schools must be compliant with the relevant Department of Education Technical Guidance Documents (TGDs).

Where do Schools apply for Grants?

The Department of Education and the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications are funding solar PV panels for schools through the Solar for Schools programme. SEAI are providing support through its helpline (01) 8082100 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

When can a School Apply for a Grant?

The grant scheme opens in November each year and applications must be made by end January the following year. Projects must be completed and fully paid for by October each year. It is unlikely that a school would be the lead applicant so schools should seek experienced coordinators and become part of their application.

What is the Schools Photovoltic Programe?

The programme, opens for applications on November 11, 2024. Eligible schools will be contacted and invited to apply.

The scheme funds up to 6 kWp of roof-mounted solar PV for eligible schools, including grid connection, monitoring system, and display screen. Invited School Authorities will receive funding approval to contract a solar PV system through a competitive public procurement process.

Schools must register and receive eligibility confirmation before seeking quotations. Contractors, listed on the SEAI Non-Domestic Micro-Generator (NDMG) Company list, will provide quotes directly to schools. These quotes will then be submitted to the Department of Education for review and funding approval.

Contractors must be listed on the SEAI NDMG Company list, which can be found here. Eco Revival Renewables is a SEAI Contractor
